The calculator here uses Mifflin-St Jeor Equation that calculates BMR, and the results produced by the calculator are basically the average estimates. BMR or basal metabolic rate is actually the energy that you expend everyday at rest. Though there are a few other equations available as well for performing such calculations, but Mifflin-St Jeor equation turns out to be most accurate of them all for the calculation of BMR. Let's take a look at this equation:

For men: BMR = 10 * weight(kg) + 6.25 * height(cm) - 5 * age(y) + 5

For women: BMR = 10 * weight(kg) + 6.25 * height(cm) - 5 * age(y) - 161

The resultant value is the estimation of calories that one should consume on any given day for maintaining the body-weight with the assumption that they're at rest. The equation is multiplied with the activity factor, which is usually 1.2 - 1.95, depending on the typical exercise levels of the person. The result of this multiplication is actually more realistic number to maintain the body-weight. 1 pound body weight is equal to almost 3500 calories. And for losing 1 pound weekly, one should be cutting down on 500 calories a day.
Even though this daily calorie calculator can give you the values for how much calories you should consume daily for maintaining, gaining or losing weight, regular exercise and proper diet would be your best shot at losing weight. It's not recommended to lose your caloric intake beyond 1000 calories a day as it can be quite unhealthy to lose 2 pounds a week and may lead to opposite effects in future as it will reduce your body's metabolism.
